About The Babel Fish Project

The Concept for The Babel Fish Project was conceived in May, 2000 by Derek Stewart Macpherson, as a way of drawing together the many artists from disparate backgrounds and disciplines he had met in three decades of playing music. The Project has already produced some fascinating collaborations, and this page is intended to showcase some of the results.
Derek plays guitar and other instruments, sings, arranges, engineers and produces the music of the Babel Fish Project but would also like to extend heartfelt gratitude to the many other musicians and others who have, and will in the future, contribute musically, technically and administratively to the project.

So far I've uploaded a selection of tracks that are meant to represent some of the history of the project and its offshoots, with the first two songs on the playlist being the most recent. They represent a collaboration between myself, Mark Doherty and Anni Coyne, both of whom I've worked with before, but separately. This project is ongoing, with more new material to come soon hopefully.
The other songs were recorded at various times since 2001. You'll notice the improvement in the standards of the recordings over that time. My song 'Opportunity Cost,' from 2001 was actually recorded on a four track tape deck, for those who remember what that is!
By 2003, tracks were digitally captured, but are largely 'live' studio recordings with a few overdubs. By 2006 we had evolved to full digital, multi-track, home studio recordings.
Musicians featured (in order of their appearance on the playlist) are myself (Derek), Mark Doherty, Anni Coyne, CB, Anne Eastaugh, Jeff Powerlett and Leticia. See the 'Musical Contributers' photo album, or my 'Sleeve Notes' blog, to see who plays what on which track. As I add more songs I'll try to add pictures with credits of anyone involved.
In the meantime, The Babel Fish Project also has two myspace sights, myspace.com/babelfishproject (archive - older stuff) and myspace.com/babelfishproject2 (new stuff), and myself and Mark (aka The Reason) have one - myspace.com/hearthereason. If you use it, please feel free to drop by and add us on there too. I'll try to get as many tracks as possible on here though, as it just works so much better, what a luxury!
We'd appreciate it if you gave Green Grow The Rashes a play on the 'REVERBNATION' player too, as we're planning to release it as a single shortly and we want to see if we can make an impression on their folk charts. Of course, until the official release it's free to download and it will remain free here for AFcollective members. Thanks for your support!

Robert Burns 250th Anniversary - new tracks added!

With thanks to all the members of the Song Review Group who contributed their thoughts, I've put up the AFC Re-mix of Green Grow The Rashes. Not sure if this will be the final version, but I wanted to have it available for the big night. Also in honour of The Bard's 250th, I've added a first draft version of another Burns song, Scots Wha Hae, or "Robert Bruce's March To Bannockburn," as it is less widely, but more correctly, known. As always, we appreciate any feedback you might have for us. Wit… Continue

Green Grow The Rashes - Single release, free to AFcollective members!!!

Due to the great reaction we've had to this song so far, we're planning an online single release for it soon, probably early December, in good time for the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns (who wrote it) on the 25th of Jan. It's also being used to help promote the ma… Continue

Sleeve Notes

When I was a kid in the 70s, the first albums I ever bought were second hand copies of early Beatles albums. They used to have sleeve notes that told you a little bit about how the track was put together, who was singing/playing what, etc. Since, along with George Martin, they were pretty much inventing multi-track recording as they went along, they'd mention if John or Paul were double-tracked, or singing their own harmonies too. I thought it was really good, and handy if you wanted to know how… Continue

Derek I thought it would take something very special to surpass Green Grow the rashes But by God you have done it with Ae fond kiss. I love the arrangement and the vocal has a haunting quality that makes you feel the emotions of the Bard when he wrote it beautiful simply beautiful. So good I am on my 4th listen.

Oh, unless the songs are in the public domain of course (I hear different figures of between 50-70 years old, so double check) in which case you can do what you wish with them

Hi guys - great sounding songs you've got here with a nice variety too. I had to double check you were Australian coz you really dont sound it.

I spotted a question in your bio and the answer is - you can upload cover versions so long as you have the download option disabled

Have fun
