Hi Ya'll
I guess a bit about me is in order. I've been playing music since I was 10. Started with piano, moved on to upright bass in the school orchestra. I was actually "drafted". Sister Rose Mathew asked me to show her my hands. (no she wasn't one of those nuns who liked to smack them with rulers) She said they looked strong and I would make a fine bass player. You don't say no to Sister.
That was the early 70's and I was hearing some amazing things come over the radio. Buffalo Springfield, and the later CSNY, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan... My brother was takeing guitar lessons at the time and I appropriated it on the sly. With a Mel Bay Chord Chart, a music book of popular tunes, and my phonograph, I taught myself to play. Not only was it great fun, it was also a hell of alot easier to schlep around a guitar than a bass....or a piano. By the time I was in High School, I guess I could be considered the house guitarist. I lead the Folk Group and was always asked to play for the talent shows backing the other kids or soloing.
I bought an Ibanez Vintage around 1976 and still have that beauty. In spite of an early run in with Eastern Airlines that gave it some "character", I gave it a set of Grover tuners and it has a lovely mellow tone. Needs a fret job, but I haven't found another guitar that I like as much, unless you move into the 6 figure jobbies.
I took a couple of semesters of classical lessons at UNT in Denton, Tx. What a great town for music. Played at the coffee houses and clubs. My brother and his wife had a duo called 3 Hams on Rye that I would occasionally play with and I recorded 3 cd's with them. I took some time away from music to raise my kids and have a real job. But the world has turned around again and I'm now playing primarily bass in a Celtic band called Irish Blind. My husband and daughter bought me an Ibanez acoustic bass for Christmas and it is lovely.
I play primarily fingerstyle, love altered tunings, especially DADGAD, write a bit, tho not prolific, sing, and seem to have no head for lead playing. Tho that may change as I hope to get a few pointers from the folks around here.
Looking forward to meeting lots of new friends here and sharing ideas.
Cheers
Angie
