It's Bringing music back to the grassroots

Everything I send to Itunes is converted to an AIF file. Is an AIF file the same as a wave file? can I set up my Itunes to take Wave files from Garage Band. Any information would be great.

Thanks

Steve

Hi Steve, I'm not too sure but I just think of them as like MP3's, just another file type but I think they're bigger. Remember, I know nothing!!

Hi ,
Aif is an Apple format intended for Protools use or audio files ( apples version of a .WAV ).
itunes default should be MP4a apple lossless and should convert files as as you import them .

Go to iTunes preferences under the iTunes logo on the page
and you will see under General ... an import settings key
the top of the 2 keys has your import setting prefered files listed .
You have WAV / Aif / ACC / Apple Lossless MP4a & MP3 .

Once you have made your choice, anything you import from either disc or desktop
should be in the chosen format , any files you have already imported that are aif ..
you can export to a folder on the desk top & delete those still in the iTunes player .

Then re-import them from the folder to iTunes and they should automatically
convert to your chosen NEW format .

Exporting garageband tunes : in the burning bouncing or exporting settings
there is a choice button to add the file you're working on ... to the iTunes Library
& it will be in the format you have chosen .

I find Apples lossless is the best for most players but
Aif and WAV arenot digitally compressed so have a higher sample rate ..
so they sound better on a sound system
!

Hope that helps .. tbone

Steve,
.aif is comparable to .wav but is, if you like, the "Apple version of". I've never been able to distinguish between the two sonically.
Logic has a facility to convert .aif to .wav and vice versa but I'm not sure about Garageband. When I get GB files from Buck, they're .aif which I never questioned as Logic takes them and .wav. Buck might know what GB will output . Try sending him a message directly.
