It's Bringing music back to the grassroots

Broon

Have you ever not clicked with anybody musically??

I havent had the pleasure of playing with that many people, perhaps only 5-6 in total. None of these has really caused that many problems when playing with them. I have heard people say before how they did not 'click' or they were just not compatible.

Anybody here found this? I am interested to know why it didnt work and what went wrong.

After all its only matching music to music, (aside from personal issues of course..)

I have that problem...

this bassist of mine... I'm not sure I should be talking to you about it... I don't want to burden you.

But he keeps groping me, and telling me that I should give him what little money I have... that if I do he will make my music sound good...

I just can't take it... and whats worse... is he is English!!! hahaha

Dear Groped
This is not typical bass player behaviour and may be more serious than you think!! The groping and demanding of money is typical bass player behaviour but the claims to make your music sound better is perverted beyond belief.. and should be dealt with as quickly as possible..

I think you should go for it. After all, bass players have strong fingers, and all that groping will lead you to hit notes you never thought possible.

I think most of the failure to "click" is borne of personality conflicts, which is passed off as "musically incompatible." Musical incompatibility would occur in a situation where you wanted to play Elvis songs, and a death metal enthusiast wanted to play drums in his own style. Most people are at least halfway intelligent (well, maybe not!), and would realize very early on that their musical interests don't mesh.

yeah as a serious answer I have not clicked with musicians before,

I spent lots of time with a band, had one song finished after lots of money spent on rehearsal, really wasn't working, I was frustrated, bad tempered and then I left lol.

Met Sketchy and within a day of collaborating we had one song finished and had spent no money... hmm

I guess it's like any relationship only the form of communication happens to be primarily through music. The weird situation is when you click with someone musically but really struggle with them on any other level - it's happened to me a couple of times. I played with a drummer once who was a very sympathetic, subtle, imaginative and technically good player. He was however an utter prat. I'm sure he felt the same about me.

You lav it Stoo ya bas..

I tend to agree that its usually a case of differing musical tastes, or personality clashes that are responsible for any disagreements, rather than just musical issues.

Interesting answers though. Cheers

I was once in a wedding band based in Argyll as a drummer. The singer basically wanted to be the local superstar of his small community, only he hadn't ever been in a band & didn't know how it worked. He managed to surround himself with the best musicians he could (I don't include myself in that) to make himself sound good.. It worked to an extent, the band sounded good & had a great set of about 40 cover versions suitable for weddings & parties.

The problem........ The singer could not sing any of them in time! The more we rehearsed the worse the problem got. Even his favourite song Psychokiller was destroyed by his timing disability. It was guaranteed that at anytime in any song he could make the rest of the band look like tossers by him missing a 1/2 beat or more.

I was eventually not invited back because I thought it might have been a problem!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe they continue their 12 1/2 bar blues to this day in & around Inveraray.

Oh how I laughed in dreadful recognition.

My all time favourite of this ilk - I was playing bass in pretty shit covers band at the time - was a singer who managed to find extra beats in the Van Morrison song Moon Dance. It feels a bit like a jazz waltz I guess but he managed to turn it into a strange 4/4, 3/4 and 5/4 mixed bar time extravaganza. The funniest bit was watching people try to dance to it.

I've tended towards more solitary pleasures in recent years (that's the internet for ya). I really couldn't be arsed with setting up a band again.

I do however still enjoy playing with my brother simply because, on so many levels, we kind of "get" each other. The thing with the two of us is that we never really question what the other is doing - there is just this trust that the other will know what to do. Pretty much the only conversation we ever have is about confirming chord patterns and song structure.
