It's Bringing music back to the grassroots

Ain't it a shame that the majority of British singer/songwriters taint thier songs by singing with an American accent, not that i have against the American accent, there are some absolutly wonderful American singers. Whats it all about, i find this quite sad............and the music goes round and round

I have a friend who started that way, coz he was mainly influenced by American singers, that was how he developed for a while

However, he has since found his own voice and sings with his normal accent. Some people I guess just dont

I think it depends on influences more than anything.

If you listen to nothing but chart and R+B then its inevitable that you will start to pick up singers quirks and mannerisms.

I agree though, it is a shame that more do not try and discover their own voices.

In that respect its much like playing an instrument. I have seen a good many players who play covers note perfect to the originals, where what you really wanna hear is there own 'voice' on it.

As long as it doesn't sound like you're singing underwater, I think it'll be okay... ;-)

I think much depends on what kind of music the singer is doing. I've heard some Americana/country-ish bands from the UK who sing in their normal accents, and to American ears, it comes off a bit odd-sounding. Sorta like when I sing trad UK songs in my American accent, I suppose, but there's nothing worse than singing something in an accent that one can't pull off at all (like Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins...ugh!). That's offensive to anyone's ears. (And for you UK'ers...he didn't fool most of us, either!)

Thank you :). I don't think I would sound that good singing my songs in a Glasgow accent ;)

What about americans and others who affect an english accent ..
such as Japanese and other Beatles cover bands who speak no english
but have learned 'parrot fashion' all the catch phrases off filmed footage
and deliver the lines and sing in flawless scouse ?? ( if that counts as english ? )

Yep, well sometimes the Bears do it for a character

You can hardly sing a song from a Southern States Americans POV and sing it with an English accent - besides, it helps people not realise who's behind the masks
